If you’re like most of the people I meet, then you live with a level of frustration. Frustration that you know what you want to do, change, or achieve. But that the important stuff always seems to get crowded out by… well, life.
But there are four things that I’ve found significantly increase the chances of success.
Whether it’s losing weight, exercising, family time, pursuing a hobby or reading a skills book, the very things we know are important are often squeezed out.
And it’s the same in business. Many of the business owners I talk to are frustrated. The day to day grind, the emergencies, the underlying issues all seem to conspire to suck the life out of initiatives that they know are important, that they really believe in, and know will make a difference.
‘What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.’
As Eisenhower first identified – ‘What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.’ Or, it is the ‘Important but Not Urgent’ things in life and work that have the potential to make the biggest difference. But they are too often drowned out as the urgent and unimportant things scream for attention.
Having a structured and consistent approach to Social and Environmental Responsibility is important, but rarely urgent.
I’ve found four things that will help you get the important things done. They are the four foundations my CSR Club is built on:
- A simple, manageable plan – each month there is a short checklist of things to achieve – we cover the small regular tasks, and keep an eye on the bigger things in the longer term plan. This keeps the right things within your frame of reference
- Support – everyone needs some regular encouragement. My check-in calls and emails will celebrate your successes and help you push through your challenges to keep on track.
- Advice – because every business is different, and ‘spanners in the works’ are a fact of life. I am available for ad hoc advice by phone and email, as well as talking things through on check-in calls
- Accountability – as Harry Beckwith said ‘There is no performance without accountability and no accountability without measurement.” Knowing that someone is checking up and checking in, provides the nudge you might need to make sure the ‘important but not urgent’ actually gets done.
